How Kyiv Central bus station has been transformed into a modern transportation hub thanks to small-scale privatization

Transformation of Kyiv central bus station: Through a successful privatization auction, the Kyiv Central bus station underwent a remarkable change from neglect to a modern transportation hub. The auction involved selling 99.9% of shares in "Kyivpasservis," resulting in winning bid of USD 8.25 mln (UAH 231 mln). The new owners, along with inclusive infrastructure and extensive renovations, turned the old bus station into a state-of-the-art facility.

Historical background and neglect: The central bus station, built in the 1950s, had suffered from neglect and inadequate maintenance. Some attempts to close the station were made in 2013. However, this idea was eventually abandoned due to its importance.

Modernization and inclusive infrastructure: The extensive modernization project began in 2020, leading to the station's reopening in 2021. In addition to building renovation, new owners introduced inclusive features like escalators, elevators, ramps, and improved restrooms. The station's services were expanded with more bus platforms accessible through QR-code-scanned tickets.

Investment and second life: Around USD 3.6 mln (UAH 100 mln) has been invested into the renovation and additional USD 0.7 mln (UAH 20 mln) are planned for IT solutions development. The successful transformation of the Central bus station shows how small-scale privatization and efficient ownership can revive abandoned public assets, contributing to a bright urban infrastructure.
